Caleb Plant is ready to return to the ring and his motivation goes beyond money. On September 14, the former FIB super middleweight champion will clash with Trevor McCumby in the desperate cartel that includes the main fighter between Canelo Álvarez and Edgar Berlanga. For Plant, this fight is not only a new challenge, but a step towards his redemption, in what he calls «la gira de la venganza».
After losing his title and winning before Canelo in November 2021 by technical KO in the eleventh bout, Plant took heights in his career, including a difficult defeat before David Benavidez. However, at 32 years old, he refuses to surrender and tries to recover his place in the boxing elite.
Without worries about revenge
While Plant isn't ruling out a rematch with Canelo, he's already made it clear he's not going to beg for it. Despite the boys being unsure if the fight will happen, 'Sweethands' believes it deserves another chance. “I feel like it's fair, especially because our first fight was competitive,” he said in a recent interview. “Probably 6-4 before the 11th fight.”
With rivals like Benavidez and David Morrell in the semi-weight division, Plant is well-positioned alongside other big names like Jermall Charlo and Diego Pacheco, making him a natural candidate for a future bout with Canelo.
A victory that opens the doors
The outcome of his next fight could be crucial to a revenge with Álvarez. “If I were part of Canelo’s roster, I could have conversations about a second fight,” Plant said. His interest in facing the new Mexican icon is more about economics; it’s also a personal desire. “It doesn’t matter where we’re fighting. It’s not just about the money. I’m here to fight,” he said firmly.
Numbers that speak
Canelo has made it clear that his priorities now are big money and spectacle. But why meet a plant again? According to his own boxer, his first fight earned 800,000 PPV buys, a figure he considers higher than some of Canelo's more recent skins.
«No he won against Gennady Golovkin, Dmitry Bivol or Jermell Charlo. We have good numbers and I think I am a good seller in boxing. I have a solid base of followers and many tunes for the worm”, concluded Plant.
