Approval of the new law on nuclear energy in El Salvador

On October 22, El Salvador's Legislative Assembly approved an innovative law on nuclear energy, marking a success in diversifying the country's energy matrix. With 57 votes in favor, Congress seeks to guarantee a sustainable electricity ministry, stabilize consumer prices and reduce dependence on energy sources vulnerable to climate change.

Objectives and benefits of the law

The new legislation aims to promote technological development and energy security, as well as mitigate residual gas emissions. With this initiative, El Salvador aligns itself with international sustainability standards, which will allow for broader economic development. The law will facilitate the creation of infrastructure necessary for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, focusing on electricity generation and research.

Capacity and discharge

Currently, the country has more than 25 capable experts in power generation facilities, research and development. This figure is expected to increase to more than 400 professionals in the coming years. In addition, it is planned to build the first research reactor, ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

Regulation and supervision

The development of the legislation continued with the advice of the Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica, given the rigorous global regulation of nuclear energy. The Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas will be in charge of regulation, through the Dirección General de Energía Nuclear and the Dirección de Control y Supervisión de la Energía Nuclear.

Licensing process

The law establishes a clear mark for obtaining licenses. Any interested entity will need to submit a solicitation to the Directiva de Reglamento. The licenses will be classified into various categories, including site selection, planning, construction, operation, transportation, waste management, export and import.

Compromise with the future

The Legislative Assembly reaffirms its commitment to the exclusive use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, for the benefit of Salvadoran society. The legislature following the selection of sites and planning up to the closure and dismantling of nuclear facilities, ensuring responsible and safe handling of radioactive materials.

With this new law, El Salvador has taken a significant step towards a sustainable and diversified energy future, positioning itself as a point of reference in the region on the use of nuclear technology for economic and social development.
