Plan to modernize platforms and increase production

Petrobras has announced an ambitious plan to increase its oil production without incurring large costs. The strategy consists in modernizing old marine exploration platforms that had already been deactivated, thus avoiding costly processes and damage to the environment. This initiative was presented by the president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, during the closing of the Rio Oil and Gas (ROG-e) conference in Rio de Janeiro, where a commission was established to evaluate the feasibility of reforming these platforms.

The main objective is to extend the useful life of these resources and facilitate the exploitation of deep waters, as current platforms are increasingly larger and more sophisticated, so much so that production costs are increasing. Chambriard mentioned that the first platforms to be considered for modernization are the P-35, P-37 and P-47, which have been retired from service at the end of their useful lives. Also contemplated is the P-19, which is close to being dismantled but has the potential to be improved.

The president of the state company, which is listed on the stock exchanges of São Paulo, New York and Madrid, ensured that, after approving the project, he would recommend Brazilian artisans to participate in the reforms. «We are compromised with the development of the national industry», he stated.

The rise of Brazilian oil

In 1998, Brazil produced less than two million barrels, while the United Arab Emirates exceeded dos mil. However, in 2024, Brazil surpassed the Emirates in oil production for the first time, thanks to its maritime platforms. This hit was searched for in December 2022 and has materialized recently.

Brazilian production amounted to more than 3 million barrels per day, while the Emirates, according to the Agenzia Internacional de Energía, produced 2.95 million barrels in December. It is hoped that Brazil will continue to increase its production, exceeding 3.2 million barrels per day in the coming years.
