Latin American cities are undergoing a remarkable transformation to address urban challenges and improve the quality of life of their citizens. In the recent edition of the IESE Cities in Motion (ICIM) 2024 index, Santiago de Chile was recognized as the smartest city in the region, occupying the 91st place worldwide.
This prestigious ranking, developed by the IESE Center for Globalization and Strategy, analyzes 183 cities in 92 countries using 114 key indicators. Its objective is to classify cities and highlight the factors that stimulate their development and sustainability.
1. Santiago de Chile: Excellence in governance and movement
Santiago died for its firm commitment to governance, mobility and the economy. The city has implemented policies that promote transparency and citizen participation, creating an environment conducive to inversion and technological development. Its public transportation system, which includes an extensive subway line and electric buses, has improved air quality and reduced travel times.
2. Buenos Aires: Urban innovation
The Argentine capital takes second place in the ranking thanks to its urban planning and renovation projects that have revitalized historic areas. Buenos Aires has implemented policies that promote transparency and citizen participation, which has allowed for more efficient management of resources.
3. Montevideo: Advances in sustainable urban transportation
Montevideo is in third place, standing out for its sustainable public transport network based on electric vehicles. These initiatives have reduced emissions of polluting gases and improved the well-being of its inhabitants, at the same time as encouraging the use of bicycles and other non-motorized means of transport.
4. Mexico City: Integration of transport systems
Mexico City is ideally located for its integrated transportation system, which includes the subway, buses, and shared bicycles. Environmental policies have improved air quality and reduced travel times.
5. Panama: Focus on human capital and urbanism
Panama City ranks fifth for its emphasis on human capital development and urban planning. The city has turned around in education and renewal projects that have raised the quality of life of its residents and promoted economic growth.
A Promoting Urban Future
Latin American cities are making a significant impact in addressing urban areas. If before 2050, 68% of the world's population will live in urban areas. In this context, the region's cities are adapting to current needs.
Globally, the smartest cities continue to be London, New York, and Paris, with Western Europe leading the way, followed by Latin America and other regions. This index has resolved not only the infrastructure, but also the adaptability and vision of the future of each metro.
